Iggy Azalea, the singer known for pop hits like “Black Widow” and “Fancy,” revealed to her fans on Twitter that she needs to take some time to deal with a medical condition. The issue, called temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJ, is commonly related to stress, as Iggy indicates is so in her situation.

“I don’t think western medicine all the way acknowledges what a huge toll mental stress takes on our bodies. But I do believe it is a factor,” the 24-year-old Tweeted.

TMJ, according to the American Dental Association (ADA), is not a single diagnosis, but an umbrella term for a handful of disorders related to the temporomandibular joints, ligaments and muscles in the face. These joints, ligaments and muscles are responsible for opening and closing the mouth when an individual chews, speaks, or swallows.”

“Each TMJ has a disc between the ball and socket,” states the ADA. “The disc cushions the load while enabling the jaw to open widely and rotate or glide. Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working properly may result in a painful TMJ disorder.”

In the case of Iggy Azalea, her TMJ disorder is reported to be related to clenching and grinding her teeth, subconscious responses of the body to stress. Many individuals experience this both while awake and while asleep. Grinding of the teeth at night can be particularly difficult to identify and treat, and is a condition known separately as bruxism.

When left untreated, teeth grinding and jaw clenching typically result in TMJ disorders that make opening and closing the jaw incredibly painful. The Mayo Clinic indicates TMJ disorders often present as pain around one or both ears, an ache in the jaw, clicking or grinding when opening the mouth, difficulty chewing, and locking of the joint, among other things.

Iggy Azalea has gotten a judge on Monday to issue a preliminary injunction that prevents some of her songs from being released by music companies working with ex-boyfriend Maurice Williams (aka rapper Hefe Wine).

In September, Azalea filed the lawsuit upon word of unreleased music and a purported sex tape. The Australian pop star admitted to having a relationship with Williams when she was a 17-year-old in Houston, Texas. The man followed Azalea (born Amethyst Kelly) to Atlanta, and according to the complaint, “downloaded the entire contents of Azalea’s personal computer,” including unreleased master recordings.

Later, after Azalea became famous for “Fancy” and “Problem” — she was the first artist since The Beatles to have #1 and #2 concurrently on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — a joint venture among Primco, ESMG, Top Sail and Wine Enterprises, Inc. claimed that they had “secured the rights” to release an EP by Azalea titled Inizio.

Iggy Azalea appears to respond to Kendrick Lamar’s comments about her in Billboard last week.

After spending much of 2014 as one of the most divisive artists in Hip Hop, Iggy Azalea has already continued to make headlines for her place in the culture early in the New Year.

Speaking with Billboard for a new cover story, Kendrick Lamar recently publicly encouraged the Australian rapper to keep “doing her thing” and received backlash from the likes of Azealia Banks and others for separate comments he made about the state of the Black community in the context of the killing of unarmed teen Michael Brown in Ferguson last year.

“She’s doing her thing,” Lamar said of Iggy Azalea. “Let her. People have to go through trials and tribulations to get where they at. Do your thing, continue to rock it, because obviously God wants you here.”

On Friday, the same day a preview of Kendrick’s cover story was released, Azalea alluded to the comments vaguely in her own Tweets.

Iggy Azalea doesn’t care if you don’t think she’s the realest.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the rapper opens up about her post-“Fancy” life (“I have to be very selective when I grocery shop”) and debunks sex tape rumors (“I would remember if I had a sex tape”). But most interestingly, she also responds to the kind of criticism she’s received from artists such as Azealia Banks: Iggy Azalea doesn’t acknowledge the way white privilege lets her selectively borrow from black culture and reap all the benefits (or, at least, Grammy nominations).

“Well, they don’t say that stuff about Macklemore,” Azalea tells Vanity Fair. “So, yes, I think it has 100,000 percent to do with the fact that I have a vagina.” She’s not entirely right: Macklemore does deal with similar criticism. But Azalea also frequently faces debates about her authenticity, ghostwriting rumors and charges of being “fake” — an accusation that’s more often lobbed at female artists than male ones. (Rapping in an exaggerated southern drawl that’s quite different from her relatively soft-spoken Australian voice, however, certainly does little to discourage those complaints.)

“People have said I’m not real rap or real hip-hop,” Azalea says, “but I don’t care if people think I’m pop or rap. Everyone interprets music differently.”
